The monetary unit of Mauritius is the Mauritian Rupee (MRU). In 1877 the Mauritian Rupee was introduced as the official national currency. According to the current exchange rate (2014) 1 EUR = 40 MRU.
Recommendation: Travellers are advised to change their money in Mauritius itself. At the airport you will find numerous exchange offices. Also in the resorts, you will find exchange offices.
Please note: Visa and MasterCard are accepted across the island. Other credit cards such as American Express only in a few places. It is possible to withdraw money at an ATM with your cash card but the Maestro logo should be on it. Please verify with your bank before travelling if your credit card will work abroad on ATMs or requires activation.
A value added tax of 15% is included in all bills relating to goods and services, including hotel and restaurant bills (except when mentioned otherwise).
