To me, nothing seemed quite so passé as planning a honeymoon in Mauritius. When I first visited the island, romance was the last thing on my mind and I was determined to cut through the gloss of the travel brochures and find the ‘real’ Mauritius which I was sure existed beyond the impossibly photogenic sunsets and beaches. Alas, as Burns so neatly put it, the best laid plans of mice and men...
There is, it is true, a lot more to the island than beaches, sunsets and palm trees as cursory glance at logic and mathematics will tell you. The island has a total area of 1865 square kilometres with a approximate coastline of 330 kilometres which means that only a tiny area of the island is actually beach. Similarly, although breathtakingly beautiful, the average sunset only lasts for about twenty minutes out of a twenty-four hour day and the ubiquitous palm tree is merely one out of thousands of arboreal species. As you can see, the pursuit of romance was definitely not on my mind.
In spite of myself, however, after only a few days on the island I was forced to admit that the sunsets, although taking up only a tiny percentage of the day, were consistently spectacular and exquisite enough to melt the heart of even the most hardened cynic. The pearly beaches and sparkling turquoise water that border the island, shaded by the pervasive palm trees, make an idyllic place to bask in the warmth of love
In addition to these visual attractions is the ‘spirit’ of Mauritius. Family is of supreme importance on the island and marriage is a consummation devoutly to be wished. This means that any love-struck couple visiting Mauritius on their honeymoon will be showered in the good wishes and friendly approval of the locals.
A wide range of accommodation is on offer to honeymoon couples, from luxurious hotels to secluded guest-houses. The diversity of activities available on the island as well, such as kayaking, wind-surfing, horse-riding and scuba-diving, finally persuaded me that Mauritius really would be the ideal place for a honeymoon. Whether you are looking for a quiet honeymoon lounging on sun-kissed beaches and partaking of delicious local delicacies or a more active time exploring the ocean or climbing the verdant mountains, Mauritius will satisfy your dreams with a fond smile at the fulfilment of love.
